The Ask
For a UC Denver group project, our team (nicknamed The Relay Racers) was asked to raise awareness and educate on a software from TechSmith (they also make the more well-known Camtasia software) called Relay, which is a video producing and editing software. Our group each decided on key roles and responsibilities to play in the creation of content towards those objectives. I was asked to be the project manager, which was a tremendous learning experience in of itself. Aside from creating the promotional video above, each group member was asked to use the tool and do a screen recording video that showcased all the benefits of a particular feature. My video highlighted the ways Relay seamlessly integrates with other software and development tools students and teachers use every day. Some of the work was more collaborative. My group each came to the team with various backgrounds and experiences. I happened to be the most seasoned on our team in graphic design, so I volunteered to capture our group’s work of a head to head comparison of TechSmith Relay to other tools via an infographic.
TechSmith Relay is blatantly marketing to the education industry, but I am in the corporate world and me and others on the Relay Racers saw potential value in this tool for other customers. Part of our overall group project presentation was ensuring business use cases and success stories existed to encourage others to further investigate if Relay could be a solution for their needs. While this presentation is specifically for UC Denver students, a lot of the information contained within our presentation is applicable to a general audience.

I learned a lot about working in a group in a managerial role with this project. I don’t have a lot of experience leading/keeping a team organized and at times during this project I know my communication could have been improved. It’s quite challenging to learn preferences and styles of people you’ve never worked with before and coordinate towards researching and presenting on something no one has experience with - all in four weeks. I enjoyed this challenging aspect of the project as much as the research, design, and presentation work itself. I am really proud of our group, I have developed new relationships, and look forward to taking what I learned from this project and implementing those best practices where I work.
